Research summary 2002

We study prominent quantum phenomena in condensed matter in a wide temperature range including micro Kelvin region. We advanced the activities in the previous year to set up an ultra-low temperature experimental facility as well as to study such subjects as 1) flow characteristics of adsorbed 3He film on a solid surface by utilizing interdigitating electrodes; 2) mobility of the Wigner solid on rotating superfluid 4He surface; 3) mixture of 2D electrons and atomic hydrogen on a He surface; 4) influence of a boundary on the order parameter of p-wave superfluid probed by ions trapped underneath a He surface; 5) control and detection of a single electron on He film and its application to quantum computing; 6) electronic properties of mesoscopic system with the emphasis on a combination with electrons on He; 7) proximity effect between s-wave superconductors and ferromagnetic metals; 8) quantum properties of carbon nanotubes.
